Genre Conventions

The rap genre is usually stereotyped to be street based music, and the artists usually where in formal clothing such as hoodies, baggy jeans etc...

Costume:

Rap artists usually wear hoodies, sweatshirts and baggy jeans etc.... also they usually where dark clothes.

They also usually where snapback hats, or baseball caps this is because this has been influenced by the street part of rap.

Setting:

A typical setting for the rap genre is an empty abandoned building in a city with a skyline backdrop this is because of the street influence, another place a rap song music video might be set is the street in a run town part of a town/city.

Survey responses

This is the feedback I got from my survey I created a few days ago the responses I have got will be very helpful and gives me a rough idea of what people think are in rap videos and who they have listened to.

Have you ever listened to any independent/new/young artists locally?

Location/Settings

The Location of my video will be in Shrewsbury and Clive, The reason I picked these 2 locations are they contrast each other as one is in a busy town and the other is a quite village with lots of nature the reason I have chose to have this contrast in my video is because in other rap music videos there are typically 2 locations, (for example in Eminem's video for rap god he is in 2 places one is a big rave and the other is an asylum where he is situated in an empty room and it is quite) that contrast as well so I thought I would take this knowledge into account and use 2 contrasting locations.

This is the location that the video is going to start, this is a small quite village, about roughly Half the video is going to be shot in, or near this area

This is the location where the other half of the video will be filmed, this is in a busy town called Shrewsbury.

Locations that will definitely be used:
  • Backgarden with shed in Clive
  • Field near Yorton pub in Clive
  • Wall in backgarden in Clive
  • Multistory car park in Shrewsbury
  • Library in Shrewsbury
  • Grinshill Car park in Clive

Colour Palette

For my video I am going to use a bright colour scene, because this kind of rap is different to street rap where there videos are usually dark as they try and created a dark street scene, so in my video it will be bright and the main artist will be wearing light clothing like blue jeans and a grey jumper. Hopefully I will be able to get a bright sunny day to film on because the song is up beat, and this kind of setting will fit it.

(This is a clip from the actual video and they used a bright colour scheme)

Also when filming the opening for my video it will be bright as I am going to film a shot of a bright sky hopefully and this is going to set the colour palette for the rest of the video, and the artist is only going to be in 2 different costumes throughout the whole thing and these are going to be bright as well.

This is one of the costumes the artists in my video will be wearing, this is the typical kind of outfit for this kind of rap as they typically wear sweatshirts and jeans and this costume fits with the bright colour scheme.

Editing Techniques

The editing techniques I will be using in my video will range from a Old TV distortion to Fish eye shots, the whole video will be fast paced as the song is fast and offers lots of opportunities for cuts, at the start of the music video there will be some text edited in the sky I am going to create this text so I can get similar colours to the clouds so that it will fit in, I will add my text by importing a .png in so the background layer of the text is transparent so that I can just place it over the first clip.

I will also be using a lot of different transitions such as: The experiment I have on my blog, I will try a hand cut transition for the video as well, as I believe these make the cutting look more professional and make the video flow more smoothly.

Camera Style for video

The camera style I will be using for my music video will be medium and close up shots as these are commonly seen in rap music I will also try and make my main singer try to seem the tallest in the shot as most rap artists like to feel like the biggest and the best in there music video, also I am going to use a couple of filling shots of random landscapes and scenes i.e. Graffiti walls etc...

I will also be using a few lower angle shots, similar to the one above because it makes the main singer stand out more, I am also going to try and edit in a Fish eye effect so it looks like the shot above as i think this looks good and these are also commonly seen in Rap music videos.

I will also try and use quite a lot of movement in my video as I have been researching rap music video and they have a lot of pans and use lots of different camera movements, I will be trying to re create some of these movements for example I will try one where I do a Pan and then speed up the pan so it looks like it is moving really quick then have the bit after that in slow mo so it creates a sort of matrix effect.
