Experiment - 'Rotating flash shot'

This is my attempt at trying to re-create a shot out of a music video, in this shot the singer, spins round and images flash of a different costume and then when he comes out of the spin he is in a different costume.

Research

This is the song I have chosen to do:

After picking my song I went and researched him and his audience, and I found out that he is not the most famous artist ever he has over 400k followers on Facebook which isn't much for an artist as other artists have over 3 million followers.

Here are some comments that his fans have left on his Facebook, YouTube and on forums:

At the moment he sells his music online and only on his official website, he doesn't have any music on iTunes the reason for this is because some of the songs he has have beats from other songs and they will not allow him to sell it on big organisations such as Play store and itunes, but he is releasing his very first album soon. In a way this means he will probably get way more sales as this album has been hyped up for, for ages so lots of people will want to buy it.

Logic is signed for the record label 'VMG' which stands for Visionary Music Group, this label is a small record label it has over 160k followers on youtube this record label is a starter label group as it takes small artists and try's to make them famous by using youtube to publicise them, The song I am doing called Spotlight by Logic has over 5 million views on their youtube channel this is what brought him his fame, what also brought him his fame was a youtube channel called 'Faze' which used his song in their video and they have over 1 million subscribers on youtube so this brought him a lot of popularity.

Ideas for music video

Logic - Spotlight

My first idea is to create a music video for the song Spotlight by Logic the reason this song would be good to make a video for is because there is lots of bass drums and you could cut the video on the drums and the lyrics are simple and that would make it easy to lip sing to and film.

At the start, it starts of facing the sky and then a title will appear in the sky and then it would pan down into a room with a old fashioned TV in and then when its looking at the TV the start of the music video will appear on the screen the reason I have picked a TV is because the sound effects at the start are sound effects of the TV I.e turning the TV on or when there is no channels available, then it will cut into the picture on the TV then the rest of the music video will just be the singer in different places singing and then at the end it zooms back out of the TV and then the TV turns of and then it pans up to 4 people on a wall then it fades out.

For the end of the video when it zooms back out of the TV the camera will pan to the right of the TV which will point to a wall with 4 people on it, these people will be wearing some sort of masks or hats etc.. then behind them will be text Which says the artists name, which I will create in 'Cinema 4D' here are some rough 3D models of this particular scene.

Jay Z Empire State Of Mind Analysis

Mise en scene:
  • The Location for this music video is New york city, in the video you see Jay Z in lots of different locations in new york mainly famous or well known building and monuments i.e Empire State, Times Square... The reason this song is set in new york is because the song is about new york and mainly the empire state building.
  • The costumes used in this music video is casual clothing and then smart clothing on the female singer, the reason these 2 costumes are seen in the video is the female singer is from the pop genre so she dresses differently to Jay Z who is from the Rap genre.

  • The lighting in this video is just natural lighting as you wouldn't notice lighting as the whole video is in black and white

Editing:

  • The editing in this video is really good, because the video flows well with the lyrics and links, at the start of the video they show pictures in time with the drums this works really well and fits in, then after this it cuts to a shot of Jay Z in new york the cuts in this video flow well and look good.
  • The rest of the music video is pretty simple and just contains some fade transitions etc... also the whole video is in black and white which makes the lights and area which is new york look better.

Camerawork:
  • The camerawork in this video works really well, and flows well, some examples of some good shots, are the shot over the new york skyline at night this is a very good panning shot and adds a break into the video
  • Another good piece of camera work is when the female singer is playing the piano in times square, there is a good long shot which is zooming in on the female singer, with the main part of times square behind her

Kanye West Gold Digger Analysis

Mise en Scene:

  • This whole video was filmed in front of a green screen, this is because it is an old video and they did not have the same amount of equipment and technology as we have today, but it is still a good video as the video relates to the song as it is about Gold diggers and they are trying to display the women as a Gold digger.
  • The costumes/Makeup they use in this video are Leather jackets and smart suits the reason they use these on the bloke is because he is meant to be rich, as the women are meant to be gold digging on him.
  • The lighting on this video is just a spotlight probably coming from 2 directions looking at the main figure/actor

Editing:
  • The editing in this music video is simple and easily done, what they have done throughout the video is just use green screen so they can put the magazine things behind the women, and so they can put the coloured backgrounds behind Kanye West.

Camera Work:
  • The camerawork in this video is also very simple as they just have 5 different shots which are medium shot of the artist close up shots and longer shots, this is easily done and they probably would not have to move the camera.
  • There is also a very good shot of a little kid which is taken from a higher angle, to make the kid look smaller and make the people behind him look taller

Eminem - Rap God Analysis

Mise en Scene:
  • This Music video was shot in several locations which are an abandoned warehouse which is a common scene in this genre of music which is rap, the other location you see 'eminem' in is a mental health clinic and he is in a chair which is holding him down the reason he is here and the reason he has been strapped down to this chair is because they are trying to contain his 'rap' ability as in this video he is known as the rap god.
  • In this video eminem has 3 costumes, the first costume he is wearing is a smart suit these are commonly seen in rap videos, the next outfit eminem is in is just casual clothes with a hoodie this is probably the most common outfit for a rap artist as this genre is mainly street based, the last outfit that you see eminem in is a similar outfit to the second one but he has a white hoodie and the reason he is wearing this is because he is meant to be a rap god and the white colour is commonly related to god as he is meant to be dressed in all white robes.
  • The lighting in this video is usually just overhead lighting because in the empty building it creates a an emptiness around the rapper and this makes him seem like the most important figure in the music video.

Editing:
  • The editing in this video is really good and it won, MTV best edited video of the year
  • At the beginning they use a green screen to put the multicoloured background behind Eminem, and they use lots of cuts in this as they want Eminem to appear as he is glitching across the screen as he is in a TV
  • At 2:05 in the music video there is a scene where eminem has been recreated using lines and they have edited it so he is half himself, this is really good editing as they would of had to film it and then import it into a programme like cinema 4D and then add a spline to it to get his outline then they would of had to copy the movement.

Camerawork:
  • The camerawork in this video is really good there is a lot of different shot such as panning shots, tracking shots and medium shots, also in the video there is a rave or something in the scene and the camera moves with this, this makes this scene look lively and its there to make an atmosphere.
  • They also use zooms in this, when Eminem is in the asylum chair they use this zoom because it shows Eminems facial expression
